Reactive manganese was previously thought to be unstable in the marine environment, but we find it to be stabilized by organic molecules in the Chesapeake Bay. In particular, we find that these molecules are so stable that they can exist even in the absence of oxygen, which indicates they have widespread distribution in the global ocean.
