Manganese exists in 3 forms in seawater, and until this work, was not considered stable in its most reactive form, Mn(III). Here we show, for the first time, that Mn(III) can be stable in oxygenated waters which has important implications for coupled cycles in the global ocean. Where other forms of Mn can perform oxidation or reduction reactions with other elements, Mn(III) is capable of both, and represents an important player in nutrient dynamics of our oceans.
